Top 5 plants to create a healthy home

It’s official plants are here to stay. Over the past few years they have made a huge come back and have become a staple decorative item for many homes. They are an easy addition to any space and they’re also the inspiration behind Pantone’s colour of the year, but there’s more to plants than being on trend.

Many of our green friends have therapeutic qualities and are said to aid in the healing of diseases and common colds, boost concentration and absorb harmful chemicals from the atmosphere.

I know it isn’t always easy to have plants around with little ones but I thought I would share the top 5 indoor plants that can help improve your air quality, create restful sleep and even reduce stress – can I get an Amen to that!

Snake plant – not scary like the name implies, the snake plant is perfect for the bedroom, as it’s particularly good at absorbing high levels of carbon dioxide, making it ideal for a good nights sleep. It’s also great for those who aren’t green thumbs as it requires low level maintenance and doesn’t need that much water to thrive.

Boston fern – This beauty is ideal for asthmatics as it acts as a natural humidifier, releasing moisture into the air and removing toxins. It’s a versatile plant that is perfect for a bathroom as it likes humidity and looks amazing in a hanging planter pot.

I’m loving these unique hanging planters from thelittleraspberry. Not only do they come in different shapes and sizes, they have beautiful cords and beading that you can customize to suit your decor making them a standout in any room or a special addition to a nursery or child’s room.

Rubber plant – this hardy plant is an all round good guy that puts up with a lot. It tolerates low light and cooler temperatures and is especially effective at removing nasty toxins in the air such as

Ivy – I know this plant can sometimes be thought of as a weed as it grows wild outside but when grown inside it is known to noticeably reduce symptoms for those suffering from asthma or allergies. Because of its robustness it can grown virtually anywhere and looks amazing when draped off a shelf or from a hanging planter.

Aloe vera – we all know of its healing properties for sun burn but did you know Aloe vera can also clean the air you breathe. This hero of a plant is known for filtering gas emissions that are commonly found in house hold cleaners – making it the perfect addition to any kitchen.

I know a lot of people freak about having indoor plants because they’re sure they will kill them. Just think of them as your baby, as long as you feed it and keep an eye on it to see if it’s unhappy in its surroundings you generally shouldn’t have a problem.

The great thing about plants is they can be an inexpensive way to decorate your home and add some colour and texture to a space. If you’re unsure how to style them, I find the best way is to mix it up.

Group together plants of different heights and sizes to create a focal point in a room and choose pots that aren’t too matchy matchy. It looks great when pots of different shapes, colours and patterns are paired together.

Above everything I think my favourite thing about plants is that they promote relaxation. As we all lead increasingly busy lives, a lot of us crave the need to slow down and reconnect. Indoor plants allows us to do this by bringing the simple feel of nature inside & help us create healthier homes.
