As we move into cooler weather here in the southern hemisphere, the change in season can sometimes bring with it doom and gloom and for some a lack in interior decorating and styling inspiration.
Gone are the long warm days of summer and along come the grey skies of winter, but it’s not all bad. It’s the perfect time for creating cosy spaces, eating hearty meals and if you’re lucky enough to own one, sitting in front of a fire place with a good glass of red!
In my opinion, the colder whether is a great way to introduce new interior trends into our homes.
So as a celebration of winter, here are my top interior decorating and styling ideas that are perfect for creating a cozy home you’d be happy to hibernate in.
Chunky Knits
There is no better way to spend a cold, wet day in doors than snuggling up with a hand made woollen chunky knit.
They make the perfect addition to any bed, lounge space or draped over your favourite reading chair and they come in an array of beautiful earthy colours, such as those from Nickel n Co.
The only better thing better than a chunky knit on a cold day, is a hot coffee to go with it!
For as long as I can remember I have always been a fan of some kind of bold colour and one that I am absolutely loving this season is ‘tobacco’ (and not the smoking kind!!)
It’s rich colour makes it the perfect addition to a bedroom to create a warm and inviting space and paired with navy, it’s a colour combination made in heaven!!
One of the easiest ways to create cosiness in your home is to layer different textured fabrics such as wool, linen, velvet, faux fur and cashmere to name a few.
Ambient Lighting
With the days being shorter in winter, it can feel like a dark time of year but don’t let this put you off.
Consider the lack of natural light an opportunity to experiment with different types of lighting to create ambience in a space.
To give a warm cast to a room, try using light bulbs with a warmer tone for a lamp or overhead light or the soft glow of candles to create a relaxing and intimate space.
Winter Greenery
Although there isn’t a lot of greenery in the winter time (depending on where you live), it is actually a great time to spruce up those vases you haven’t been using since spring with beautiful branches, twigs or what ever foliage is in season and native to your area.
You would actually be surprised by how much decorating inspiration you will find by just looking in your own backyard and best of all it doesn’t have to cost a thing!
